The table below gives dates for different elements of the Brightwells Yard.
Note that these are indicative and subject to change.
The footpath between Sainsbury’s car park and the former tennis courts closed in June 2018. This path will reopen when work is complete in 2022.
The footpath leading from South Street to the Leisure Centre was permanently closed in July 2018, and new pathways will be created within the scheme.
Borelli Walk closed in August 2018 for the construction access bridge to be installed safely. It will reopen in January 2019 and close again for the bridge to be removed in 2022.
Before the construction work started, archaeological digs took place in the site. Nothing of historical significance was discovered, thus allowing construction to continue.
Spring 2019 – Autumn 2021
Construction work is expected to begin in early 2019 upon completion of the bridge. Works will commence with the multi-story car park and the residential units.
Work will begin on improving levels of traffic in the town and the part-pedestrianisation of East Street, this includes the reconfiguration of the Woolmead loop road. These works will be done in phases to minimise disruption.
Spring 2021 – Spring 2022
Between May 2021 and May 2022 the residential aspects of the scheme will be completed. The phased opening means that some apartments may be ready to buy off-plan as early as December 2020.
The majority of the retail and leisure elements of the scheme are due to be completed by early 2021, and open for business soon after.
Reel Cinemas is one of the largest independent cinema operators in the UK, and the new six-screen cinema is expected to open during the summer of 2021.
The final works of the regeneration scheme include the installation of a footbridge over the River Wey, to complete the network of footpaths from East Street to Borelli Walk. d.
Construction access from the A31 is set to close and works will begin to remove the temporary bridge. At this stage, the final landscaping plan of the area will be established.
